Why plant a hedge?

What a living boundary does that a fence never will.

🔒

Increase privacy

Blocks sightlines and softens noise from roads and neighbours, and gets denser every year.

🐦

Home for wildlife

British hedges shelter nesting birds, hedgehogs and pollinators. Native holly supports the most.

💨

Breaks the wind

A hedge filters wind instead of fighting it, with no more replacing blown down fence panels.

🍃

Cleaner air

Dense foliage traps traffic pollution and dust, ideal for front gardens on busy UK roads.

🏡

Adds kerb appeal

A mature green boundary lifts how a property looks and feels compared with tired fencing.

📋

No planning needed

Unlike walls and tall fences, you can generally plant and grow a hedge without planning consent.

The care essentials

Good care, made simple

Healthy hedging does not need to be complicated. Get these three basics right and your plants will establish quickly.

PlantingGive roots the best possible start

Plant into prepared soil at the recommended spacing. Firm gently, water deeply and finish with a generous layer of mulch.

WateringDeep drinks build resilient roots

Water thoroughly after planting and during dry spells for the first two growing seasons. A deep soak is better than a light daily sprinkle.

PruningA little trimming keeps it dense

Lightly trim new growth once or twice a year. Keep the base slightly wider than the top so sunlight reaches the whole hedge.

Care varies slightly by species. Follow the advice supplied with your plants for the best result.
